West Nipissing Flooding Preparedness

A rainfall warning from Environment Canada is in effect. Significant rainfall is expected tonight through Thursday Night. Based on the weather forecast and the latest information provided by the MNRF – North Bay District, Lake Nipissing has the potential to rise by more than 20 cm by the end of the week.  

Properties in low-lying areas are most at risk for flooding and road closures. Residents at risk are instructed to take necessary precautions to mitigate damage to their properties and to prepare for a potential evacuation. The current conditions of the roads are passible with some lightly covered with water, however residents should remain vigilant as conditions change. Should conditions worsen, Emergency Services will be visiting the affected properties to inform residents of their options.

The Municipality will provide 100 bags per residence to those in need. Please note that sand bags are to be used to protect homes and accommodations, not for secondary structures and shorelines. Sand bags can be picked up at:

- Sturgeon Falls Fire Station (22 Holditch Street) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

-  Lavigne Fire Station (Hwy 64 South) – from 6 to 8pm on Wednesday May 8, or 9 am to noon on Thursday May 9.

Sand piles will be available in areas including:

- Marleau Road (at Lac Deux Milles Road Intersection)

- Marleau Road (at the East end/dead end)

- Avenue du lac in Lavigne

-  End of Eugene Rd (between Arbour and Comeau)

-  O’Brien (Turn around)

- Quesnel (West End)

The Emergency Services and Operations Team will continue to monitor water levels in the area. Crews will continue to patrol at-risk areas daily assess any changes.
