    Re-use Program

    Paint can be dropped off and introduced into the Re-use Program. Good quality household products such as paint, stains, varnishes and cleaners can be picked up by residents, free of charge.

    Environmental Services

    The Municipality of West Nipissing owns and operates landfill sites in Badgerow Township, Field, Kipling, Lavigne, River Valley, Sturgeon Falls and Verner. The operating costs of these sites are paid by the users and collected by the municipality through the municipal tax bill.

    Landfills (Hours of Operation)

    NOTICE - May 5, 2020

    The Sturgeon Falls Landfill is scheduled to reopen to the public on Monday, May 11. 

    On dates between May 11 and June 6, the Sturgeon Falls Landfill will be open for free of charge to residents of Cache Bay, Springer and Sturgeon Falls for Spring Cleanup 2020.

    A controlled limit of vehicles will be enforced at the gate to maintain physical distancing. Increased waiting times should be expected.

    Monday to Friday May 11 to 15 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    Tuesday to Friday May 19 to 22 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    Saturday May 23 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
    Monday to Friday May 25 to 29 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    Saturday May 30 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
    Saturday June 6 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
    • Maximum of 2 cubic metres of household waste (approximately a full pick-up truck per resident.
    • Waste and recyclables must be properly sorted when brought to the landfill.
    • All items must be placed in designated areas of the landfill. Otherwise, tipping fees apply.
    • Regular fees apply for commercial or business waste and renovation/construction debris in large volumes.

    NOTICE - APRIL 9, 2020

     

    The Sturgeon Falls Landfill remains closed to the public until further notice. We understand that this may be inconvenient, however this measure is necessary to further support the importance of physical distancing and reduce the spread of COVID-19.

    Landfills that remain open provide waste and recycling services in areas where curbside pickup is not available community-wide (Verner, Field, Lavigne, Kipling, River Valley and Muskasong). Access to landfills are only permitted to residents residing in those respective communities. Please practice physical distancing when interacting with the landfill attendant and when unloading your waste. We thank you for your understanding in our efforts to “flatten the curve”.

    NOTICE - MARCH 30, 2020

    The Sturgeon Falls Landfill is Closed to the General Public Until Further Notice

    The Sturgeon Falls landfill is temporarily closed to the general public until further notice. This includes the cancellation of the upcoming Free Saturday. Until further notice, the Landfill will only be accessible to contractor, commercial and industrial waste. With landfill residential traffic steadily increasing at the Sturgeon Falls site, this closure is necessary to further support the importance of physical distancing and reduce the spread of COVID-19. Please note that curbside garbage and recycling collection services remain unaffected. We thank you for understanding.

    The Sturgeon Falls landfill is scheduled to reopen to the public on Monday, May 11.

    How to get there: landfill site is situated off Highway 17 between Verner and Warren on Deer Lake Road north, approximately 2 kms from Highway 17 on right hand side

    How to get there: from Field, proceed south on Highway 575 towards Verner. Turn left at Muskasung Lake Road, site gate located on right hand side.

     

    Leaf and Yard Waste

    Upcoming Collection: Monday, June 15, 2020 

    The collection will take place in the urban areas of Sturgeon Falls, Cache Bay and Springer.

    Yard waste includes leaves, grass clippings, small branches (no longer than 2 feet in length), brush and other organic material.

    Leaf and Yard Waste Collection 

    Residents within the urban area of Cache Bay, Springer and Sturgeon falls receive curbside leaf and yard waste pick up on the first double digit Monday of the month from April until November.

    Note: Due to COVID-19 2020 Pickup Dates are TBD - next pickup is scheduled for Monday, June 15, 2020 

    Place materials in paper yard waste bags, or in an open top container with handles.
    Garbage bags and plastic bags will not be accepted.
    Leaf and yard waste mixed with other garbage will not be collected.

    You may also bring these items to the Landfill.
    (Sturgeon Falls Landfill will reopen on Monday, May 11th).

    • Tree & hedge trimmings, pine cones, weeds, plants, etc.
    • Fallen fruit & nuts from trees
    • Straw, corn stalks, pumpkin
    • Branches shorter than 2 feet in length (placed in yard waste bags or tied/bundled)

    Not accepted 

    • Rocks, soil, sod
    • Stumps, trunks, logs
    • Branches larger than 2 feet in length
    • Driveway sweepings
    • Flower pots, plastic bags
    • Kitchen scraps
    • Applicances or other recyclable material

    The desired curbside situation is two streams clearly separated, with all dry paper recyclables neatly placed in a Blue Box, cardboard box, paper bag or tightly tied bundle. 

    Placed right next, a second stream, consisting of a mix of container recyclables (plastics, glass and metals). Contained in either a second Blue Box or a clear plastic bag(s).


    In Home Recycling Program

    Designate an area in your home for storage of the recycled material.

    1. Distinguish what can and cannot go in your blue box (see below)
    2. Establish a routine of separating your household waste from the recycled materials
    3. Mark down on a calendar the bi-weekly schedule of the curb side pick up. (every second week)
    4. Place your recyclables at the curb no earlier than 7pm on the eve and no later than 7am on the morning of. Please seperate the papers from your glass, cans and plastics.
