OCPC Consents to West Nipissing Police Disbandment

August 29, 2018

The Municipality of West Nipissing was informed that the Ontario Civilian Police Commission (OCPC) has approved the disbandment of the West Nipissing Police Services.

Following Council’s acceptance of the OPP Costing Proposal (by-law 2017-85) on December 5, 2017, the Municipality submitted a request for the disbandment of the municipal police department. Subsequently, the Police Services Board requested an interim stay hearing on the matter. On July 12, 2018, Justice Alexander D. Kurke of the Superior Court of Justice ordered that the by-law remain in force, allowing the OPP transition work to progress, and encouraged that the OCPC continue its assessment of the application for disbandment.

In its August 29, 2018 decision, the OCPC has granted consent to the disbandment of the West Nipissing Police Service so that the Municipality may enter into a contract for the provision of police services by the OPP. The OCPC’s decision confirms that it is satisfied with the steps taken by the Municipality to consult with all parties involved, including residents.

The original disbandment date of October 11, 2018 was postponed as a result of the judicial review launched by the Police Services Board. An effective date of disbandment is yet to be determined.

The West Nipissing Police Services will continue to serve the area until the disbandment is in effect.
