Kids in West Nipissing, ages 3 to 18, have geared up for the 2018-2019 hockey and skating season this month.
The Municipality is home to two Minor Hockey Associations and two Figure Skating Clubs amounting to about 400 active kids from September to the end of March. Teams like the West Nipissing Sting, Verner Bulls, the Sturgeon Falls and Verner Skating Clubs are run solely by local volunteers. The West Nipissing Minor Hockey Association has approximately 270 registered kids this year, over 40 volunteers, with 16 teams overall. The Verner Skating Club will be working with around 30 skaters and 20 volunteers. The Verner Minor Hockey Association has about 80 participants and 30 volunteers.
“Many of our parents help out on multiple teams,” says Krista Sheppard, President of WN Minor Hockey “Our volunteers are key to having the teams run smoothly. All coaches, trainers, managers, and committee members donate their time. They give countless hours to ensure our local kids have somewhere to play hockey. I am so thankful and appreciative of all the volunteers that step up every year to help.”
Isabelle Richard from the Verner Minor Hockey Association comments that “In Verner, everyone rallies together to offer a great experience for the kids. Parents, grandparents, even aunts and uncles, and some high school kids lend a hand throughout the year. We have several new administrative team members who are open to new ideas and initiatives. This year for the first time, we’ll have a raffle fundraiser, which will allow us to keep the registration fees reasonable and to put new jerseys on our players.”
The Municipality is proud to have such a large group of dedicated volunteers keeping our youth active and promoting a healthy lifestyle. By hosting tournaments, the leagues and clubs bring families from all over the province to our community. Ice season has a positive economic impact on local restaurants, hotels, shops, and fuel stations.
The Municipality wishes everyone a safe and fun season to the hockey and skating clubs, along with other community teams like the West Nipissing Lynx, Football des Patriotes de Franco-Cité, West Nipissing Wild Volleyball, Sturgeon Falls Sharks Swim Team, the Dance Academy and Scouts Canada participants.
