Statement from the Mayor

West Nipissing joins communities across Canada in honouring the 215 children whose remains were found at the site of a former residential school in Kamloops, British Columbia. All Canadian flags on Municipal properties in West Nipissing will be lowered to half-mast.

Our thoughts are with the children, their families, their communities, and all who are most affected by such violence. No words can express the terrible harm and neglect inflicted on Indigenous children who were taken from their families and communities.

As a municipality who strives for inclusion and who does not support racism or violence, we can contribute to positive change. I encourage all West Nipissing organizations, businesses, stakeholders, and fellow residents to honour the 215 children by lowering their Canada flags, or by any other meaningful gesture.

Together we mourn,
Joanne Savage
Mayor, Municipality of West Nipissing
