The Municipality of West Nipissing owns and maintains five active cemeteries. Columbaria are available in the Cache Bay, Verner and Field cemeteries.

Burials

All burials must be arranged by the Municipality. Burials may only be conducted by municipally authorized persons.

Burials generally take place between May 1st and November 15th (weather permitting):

  • Monday to Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. There is a weekend burial surcharge applicable.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I purchase a lot or niche?
Lots and niches may be purchased from the Municipality. An at-need burial lot or niche may be purchased in cash or on an instalment payment plan (as outlined in our by-law). A pre-need lot may be purchased through the signing of a contract and payment.

May I place decorations on our columbarium or lot?
Decorations, flowers, wreaths, or ornaments are not permitted on or near the columbarium or niche. Any embellishments to the niche doors must receive written approval from the Clerk’s Department.

Lot and grave decorations (flowers and artificial flowers) are permitted once fees and charges have been paid. Granular, decorative stones, candles, benches, containers made of glass, and other perishable and destructive materials are not permitted. The planting of shrubs and flowers must first receive written approval from the Clerk’s Department.

The Municipality reserves the right to remove any item which does not comply with the by-laws and will remove dead flowers, faded, damaged or unsightly decorations, at its discretion.

Am I allowed to bring my pet into the cemetery?
No animals are allowed in the cemeteries. Pets brought into the cemetery by vehicles must remain in the vehicle.

Am I allowed to bring food or drinks into the cemetery?
Unless directly associated with a funeral service, no food or picnic parties are not allowed in cemeteries. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted on cemetery properties.

Am I allowed to do repairs or alterations to a monument?
Only municipally authorized and licenced monument dealers may carry out any work in Municipality-owned cemeteries.

Can ashes be buried on an existing grave?
Burials/internments on existing graves are permitted, however may require authorization. Please contact the Clerk’s Department.
