Environmental and Climate Change Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for the West Nipissing area. Extreme weather is expected to last a few days. Members of the public who do not have access to shelter can find warmth in the following municipal public spaces:

  • The Municipal Office. Open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • West Nipissing Public Library, hours vary. See branch details here
  • The Verner Arena lobby. Monday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

A 24 hours shelter is available at 590 Chippewa Street, in North Bay (Cold Weather Housing Response Program – District of Nipissing Social Service Administration Board).

If you see someone in distress, please contact 9-1-1. For non-emergency health related advice, residents can dial 8-1-1. Extreme weather events can pose a significant health risk on vulnerable individuals. Watch for cold related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes. Dress warmly. Dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant. Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.
