Spring Road Safety Reminder and Maintenance Update

Spring Road Conditions

Spring has arrived, bringing fluctuating temperatures, rain, and melting snow that can affect road conditions. Municipal crews have been preparing by clearing snow from problem areas and opening culverts and catch basins to manage runoff and reduce flooding risk.

Gravel Road Maintenance

Gravel roads are especially vulnerable this time of year. Potholes, frost heaving, and water pooling are common. Grading is only effective once the surface has firmed up—grading too early creates more mud and can worsen conditions. Adding material prematurely may also damage the road surface and create hazards. For these reasons, maintenance is carefully timed based on weather and road conditions.

Load Restrictions

Spring load restrictions (5 tonnes per axle) have been in effect since March 23 to protect municipal roads while the ground remains soft and susceptible to damage during the thaw.

Safety Reminders

  • Drive with caution—rain, snowmelt, potholes, and lingering ice can make roads unpredictable.
  • Check your sump pump to ensure it’s working properly.
  • Direct downspouts away from building foundations to prevent water damage.
