West Nipissing Residents Urged to Use Caution as Brush Fire Activity Increases

The Municipality of West Nipissing reminds residents to use extreme caution with open air burning and outdoor activities that could spark a fire.

Despite localized flooding in some areas, much of the region remains very dry as forests and vegetation emerge from winter dormancy and have not yet regained full moisture. Combined with high winds, these conditions can cause fires to start easily and spread quickly.

From April 20 to May 6, 2026, the West Nipissing Fire and Emergency Service responded to 5 brush fires, spending a total of 22 hours fighting those fires.

Individuals responsible for negligent fires may be held financially responsible for emergency response costs, including municipal fire services and Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) response.

As outlined in By-law 2024/79, open-air burning is regulated to protect public safety, property, and the environment.
