The Ontario Provincial Police (O.P.P.) and the Municipality of West Nipissing are proud to announce that the Nipissing West O.P.P. boardroom was officially named the Léo Malette Boardroom in recognition of his remarkable leadership and inspiring dedication. Mr. Malette, who was born and raised in Cache Bay is a well-known, highly respected community member who has dedicated over 40 years to public service.

Throughout his political, professional and volunteering career, Léo’s contributions have left a mark on both the community and local policing. He has served in roles including: Councillor and Mayor of the Town of Cache Bay (prior to the 1999 amalgamation); Ward 2 Councillor for the Municipality of West Nipissing (consecutively from 2003 to 2022); Deputy Mayor; Chair of the Board for the Au Château Home for the Aged; and Chair of the Board for the West Nipissing General Hospital. Additionally, Léo and his wife Rollande have contributed significantly to local volunteer initiatives including the West Nipissing Food Bank. 

The boardroom naming ceremony, held on March 19, 2025, was attended by Mr. Malette and his family,  members of the North East Region O.P.P., along with a few Council and committee members. Chief Superintendent, Mike Pilon, North East Regional Commander of the O.P.P., and Mayor Kathleen Thorne Rochon both spoke during the ceremony. The event was recorded and will be available to the public from the municipal Youtube channel.

Mayor Kathleen Thorne Rochon stated: “Léo has been an important advocate for our community, known for his thoughtful leadership and his passion for making West Nipissing a better place for all of us. By naming this room in his honour, we ensure that his contributions will never be forgotten and that future generations will understand the importance of community engagement and leadership.”

Jay Barbeau, Chief Administrative Officer for the Municipality, shared: “It’s an honour and a privilege to recognize such a distinguished gentleman who has dedicated his life to public service and volunteering for the community.”
