West Nipissing Hosts its First Annual Volunteer Recognition Ceremony

The Municipality of West Nipissing is proud to celebrate the inaugural Volunteer Recognition Program, honouring the individuals and organizations whose dedication, generosity, and community spirit help make West Nipissing a stronger, more connected place to live.

A ceremony was held on June 25, 2026, at the historic Sturgeon River House Museum to recognize volunteers who were nominated by the community. Awards were presented in four categories: Dream Team (Community Group Recognition), Community Champion (Adult Volunteers), Heart of Gold (75+ Years), and Rising Star (17 Years and Under).

The following individuals and organizations were formally recognized through the 2026 Volunteer Recognition Program:

  • Community Champion (Adult Volunteers)

Nominations were open to the public and many submissions were received from across the municipality. A selection committee consisting of three members of Council and two municipal staff members reviewed the nominations based on criteria including community impact, leadership and mentorship, and lasting contribution.

The ceremony featured remarks from Mayor Kathleen Thorne Rochon, the award presentations, and an opportunity for recipients, their families, and community members to celebrate the spirit of volunteerism.

The Municipality wishes to thank everyone who participated in this year’s nomination process and who helped recognize the outstanding contributions of all local volunteers.

Reflecting on the success of the inaugural event, Kassandra Girard, the Municipality’s Economic Development Officer, said:

“Volunteers are at the heart of West Nipissing. So much of what they do happens quietly and without any expectation of recognition, but their generosity, compassion, and dedication have a lasting impact on the people and organizations they support. This celebration gave us an opportunity to pause, recognize their contributions, and sincerely thank them for helping make our community stronger, more welcoming, and more connected.”

She added:

“We were incredibly proud to recognize volunteers representing different ages, communities, organizations, and areas of service. We hope this becomes a meaningful annual tradition that not only celebrates those who give back, but also inspires others to become involved and discover the difference they can make in their community.”

Residents interested in making a difference in the community are encouraged to get involved by contacting local organizations directly or by visiting the Municipality’s Volunteer page at https://www.westnipissing.ca/culture-recreation/volunteer/ to learn about volunteer opportunities.
