Environmental and Climate Change Canada has issued a heat warning for the West Nipissing area. High heat and humidity are expected to last most of the week. Members of the public who do not have access to air-conditioning can find relief in public spaces during the following hours.

  • The Municipal Office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • West Nipissing Public Library hours vary. See branch details here
  • The Verner Arena lobby will be made available, as required. Please contact 705-753-2250 to arrange for staff to open the facilities on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and/or Thursday of this week (June 17, 18, 19 and 20).
  • Residents can also find relief at outdoor public spaces such as splash parks, public beaches and parks with shaded areas.

If you see someone in distress, please contact 9-1-1. For non-emergency health related advice, residents can dial 8-1-1. Extreme heat and humidity events can pose a significant health risk on vulnerable individuals including infants, the elderly, the socially isolated, persons with chronic diseases or mobility issues, the marginally housed, and those experiencing homelessness. The Municipality encourages residents to be attentive to their friends, neighbours and loved ones who may be vulnerable.

This response is issued in alignment with the municipal Heat Relief Plan. Heat relief responses can be extended or modified based on community needs and as per recommendations from the Emergency Control Group.

For more resources and tips, see the municipal Heat Relief webpage or the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit’s Heat and Humidity page.
