The Municipality of West Nipissing is advising residents that recent winter weather conditions have created challenging road conditions across the community.
This winter season has brought significant snowfall and periods of ice, requiring ongoing snow removal and sanding operations.
Things to note:
- Municipal Public Works crews continue to carry out plowing and sanding activities on a near-daily basis, often in the same difficult conditions experienced by motorists.
- To improve traction, the Municipality applies a mixture of sand and salt to road surfaces. During periods of extremely cold weather, both salt and sand are less effective, as materials may not adhere properly to the roadway and can be displaced by traffic. As a result, residents may continue to experience slippery conditions, particularly at intersections.
- The Municipality procures its winter salt supply in advance for the entire season. Despite multiple heavy snowfall events and a province-wide salt shortage, the Municipality does not anticipate running out of salt this winter.
Residents are reminded to adjust driving behaviour according to weather and road conditions, including reducing speed, increasing following distance, and exercising additional caution when approaching intersections.
The Municipality appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation as winter maintenance operations continue and encourages everyone to prioritize safety.
