What is a Discretionary Grant?

The Discretionary Grant program provides financial assistance and fee waivers to eligible organizations to help them with events and projects that improve the quality of life of residents. 

The program may support activities related to sports, seniors, and youth, special events, arts, culture, heritage, and the economic development. Each application is reviewed by Council in a discretionary manner.

Eligibility Summary 

  • Eligible projects are expected to demonstrate alignment with the Council’s Term Plan goals to support and enhance the cultural, social, and economic well-being of the community.
  • Applicants should be a registered business or not-for-profit corporation.
  • Applicants must clearly outline their organizational and administrative structure. 
  • Organizations are eligible to receive one grant per calendar year per event/project to a maximum of $25,000. 
  • Applications are discussed during regular meetings of Council. 
  • Incomplete applications will be returned to the applicant for re-submission.
  • The evaluation process is discretionary and there is no guarantee that any award will be granted by Council, or that the amount requested will be awarded in full.
  • Requests exceeding $5,000 are subject to additional financial reporting requirements as outlined in the Discretionary Grant Policy.

Through the Discretionary Grant program, Council aims to support local organizations who intend to help strengthen Community development for a vibrant present and future. Goals within this pillar include:

  • Economic Development, prosperity and growth 
  • Community safety and well-being 
  • A vibrant and engaged community 

This Term Plan was initiated by Council in an effort to strategically align the community’s needs with the actions of the Municipality. The 4-year plan allows Council to set priorities and to stay focused on goals and outcomes during their term. It plays a key role in decision-making and informs the work of the organization.

Council’s Terms Plan main pillars include:

  • Community development for a vibrant present and future
  • Community-centric facilities and public spaces 
  • Strategic management and policies 
  • Functional and dependable infrastructure 
  • Efficient and effective service delivery 

Application Details

It is ideal to submit your application between June 1 and October 1 to be considered prior to Council’s yearly budget deliberations. However, applications are accepted throughout the year.
